And so, as the year 2024 fades and the joy of Christmas brightens, let us not forget to take a little time to reflect on the true meaning of this most sacred season. For Christians, Christmas is not a time for presents and festivity alone but is one of deep celebration of God’s love and the birth of Jesus Christ, our Savior.
Embracing the True Meaning of Christmas
In the bustle of the holiday season, we get caught up in the commercialism and tend to totally forget what Christmas is about. St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of ecology, once said, “For it is in giving that we receive.” This strong message reminds us that the real meaning of Christmas is one of selflessness, compassion, and sharing one’s blessings with less fortunate people.
The Gospel of Luke 2:14 tells us, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” This is a call for peace and goodwill that should echo deep within our souls to motivate us in the building of bridges of understanding toward working for a just and equitable world.
Challenges Facing Christians Today
As we celebrate Christmas of 2024, we bear the problems of today when the world has grown more secularized; faith values had been marginalized. We know that we are all called in our daily life to bear witness to Christ: to live our faith fearlessly and with conviction.
The constant teachings of Pope Francis are of social justice, taking care of the environment, and the defense of the poor and the marginalized. He reminds us that to be true disciples we should put our faith into action and become instruments of peace and reconciliation in a world torn by conflict and division.
A Call to Renewal
Christmas is a renewed time of spiritual rejuvenation through repentance and re-dedication to lives in Christ: a time to reflect, to atone for ourselves, to restore our sins, and recommit more fully to following the inspiration of Jesus Christ. Grateful for this special sacred season and praying together as citizens of a diverse country, including people of many different backgrounds and beliefs, let the spirit of love, of kindness, of generosity come alive anew in our spirits.
In preparing for our coming year, let’s live authentically, reflecting love toward neighbors as ourselves with hope and compassion in meeting the needs of a sometimes desperate world. May the spirit of peace, joy, and love of Christmas fill your heart and home this holiday season and throughout the New Year. Merry Christmas!
