Jesus Heals a Deaf and Mute Man – A Reflection

The Gospel Reading according to Mark (Chapter 7, verses 31 to 37).

Jesus left the district of Tyre and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, into the district of the Decapolis. And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He put his finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, “Ephphatha!” (that is, “Be opened!”). And immediately the man’s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly. He ordered them not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered them not to, the more they proclaimed it. They were exceedingly astonished, and they said, “He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

REFLECTION:

In the Gospel of Mark chapter 7, verses 31 to 37, Jesus performs a miraculous healing of a deaf and mute man. He takes the man aside and puts his finger in his ears, then spits and touches the man’s tongue. After this, Jesus looks up to heaven, sighs, and commands the man to be healed. Immediately, the man is healed and able to both hear and speak. Jesus then sternly warns the people around him not to tell anyone, but the more they try to keep the miracle a secret, the more word spreads. This miracle of Jesus demonstrates his power and glory and serves as a reminder of his ultimate authority.

This passage from Mark 7:31-37 is a remarkable example of Jesus’ compassion and power. Jesus heals a man who is deaf and mute, and the man’s ability to speak and hear is restored. This story offers a powerful reminder that even the most seemingly impossible situations can be made possible with faith and hope.

In this passage, we are told that Jesus placed his fingers in the man’s ears and spat and touched his tongue. This is a powerful symbol that Jesus was able to reach into the depths of the man’s suffering and heal him from within. Though he was deaf and mute, Jesus was able to reach him and restore his ability to speak and hear.

The story is also a reminder of the power of faith. Jesus had faith that he would be able to heal the man, and this faith was rewarded when his healing was successful. This story is a reminder to us that faith is powerful and can help us to overcome even the most daunting obstacles.

The story also teaches us the importance of compassion. Though the man was suffering, Jesus had compassion on him and sought to heal him. This is a powerful reminder that we should always strive to show compassion to those who are in need, regardless of their circumstances.

This passage from Mark 7:31-37 is a powerful reminder of the power of faith and compassion. It reminds us that no matter how seemingly impossible our circumstances may be, we should have faith and strive to show compassion to those who are suffering. By doing so, we can find hope and healing even in the most difficult of times.
