A Reflection from the Gospel of John – Jesus Raises Lazarus from the Dead

As we reflect on the Gospel of John chapter 11, verses 1 to 45, we are presented with the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. This powerful miracle is a testament to the love and power of Jesus Christ, and it serves as a reminder of the hope that we have in him.

When Jesus hears that Lazarus is ill, he waits two days before coming to his aid. This delay may seem puzzling to us, but it serves a greater purpose. Jesus wants to show that he is not simply a healer, but that he has power over death itself. By allowing Lazarus to die and then raising him from the dead, Jesus demonstrates his divinity and his authority over all things.

As Jesus approaches the tomb of Lazarus, he weeps. This is a powerful moment that shows the humanity of Jesus. He is not simply a distant and aloof figure, but he is deeply moved by the pain and suffering from those around him. His tears show us that he is a compassionate and loving God who cares deeply for each one of us.

When Jesus calls out to Lazarus to come out of the tomb, he shows us that he has power over death. This is a powerful message of hope for us as Christians. We know that death is not the end, but that we will be raised to new life in Christ. This is the promise that we hold onto as we face the challenges and struggles of this life.

The raising of Lazarus serves as a reminder of the importance of faith. When Martha questions why Jesus did not come sooner, Jesus reminds her that if she believes, she will see the glory of God. This is a powerful message for all of us. We must have faith in Jesus and trust in his plan for our lives. When we do this, we will see the glory of God at work in our lives and in the world around us.

This also serves as a reminder of the power of community. When Jesus arrives in Bethany, he is surrounded by a community of people who are mourning the loss of Lazarus. Through their grief and their prayers, they are able to witness the power of Jesus and the miracle of Lazarus’ resurrection. This is a powerful reminder that we are not meant to face the challenges of this life alone, but that we are called to be part of a community of faith that supports and uplifts one another.

Finally, the story of Lazarus’ resurrection is a powerful message of hope, faith, and community. It reminds us of the power of Jesus Christ and the love that he has for each one of us. May we be inspired to deepen our faith in Jesus, and to trust in his plan for one another.
